SNOW and AVALANCHE REPORT
Estimation of the AVALANCHE RISK until THURSDAY evening (outside the open marked runs) :
All massifs : MODERATE risk - level 2 in the early morning then deteriorating in the daytime to
CONSIDERABLE risk - level 3.
SNOW COVER CONDITIONS :
Good snowcover for the time of year. Measured heights of snow (40 cm at 900 m, 60-130 cm at 1200
m, 75-230 at 1800/2000 m) are often above or locally near the seasonal average especially in Haute
Maurienne and Southern Haute Tarentaise.
Surface snow is often spring snow (crusted in the early morning then softening and moistening in the
daytime) below 1500/2100 m on North slopes up to the highest altitudes on sunny steep South
slopes. On other North slopes and cold areas, it is still cold and light (down to 10-30 cm deep) or
wind-packed especially on the high mountains.
SNOWPACK STABILITY until THURSDAY evening :
The whole snowpack is made of wet snow below 1200 m on steep North slopes and 2800/3000 m on
sunny steep South slopes. Higher the wet snow layer becomes thinner and thinner with the altitude, at
surface.
After night freezing, with expected warm temperatures and solar radiation in the daytime natural wet
snow sluffs and small to large sized ground avalanches will still occur on steep enough slopes,
predominantly on East to South to West sunny slopes, at all altitudes. An additional load (skiers,
snowboarders, snowshoers, cornice) may make them slide.
On North slopes and other cold areas, some hard wind slabs may still be locally present especially on
the high mountains and near the summits of the Bauges and the Italian border. They may be triggered
by one or several skiers.
